Contribute Your Expertise. Shape Future Generations. Govern for Impact.
The University of Nottingham is a globally recognised, research-intensive university with a distinctive mission, a strong civic commitment and an exceptional international presence. With campuses in the UK, China and Malaysia, the University brings together a diverse and ambitious community of students, staff and partners. Through world-leading research, outstanding education and deep engagement with communities and industry, Nottingham continues to make a significant contribution locally, nationally and globally.
The University is now seeking to appoint exceptional Lay Members of Council to join its governing body and help guide the institution through a period of opportunity and change. Council plays a vital role in the stewardship of the University, overseeing strategy, financial sustainability, risk, governance and long-term institutional success, while ensuring the University continues to fulfil its charitable objectives and public responsibilities.
We are keen to hear from individuals who bring significant leadership, executive or non-executive experience from the public, private or third sectors. Whether your expertise has been gained through board leadership, organisational transformation, financial oversight, governance, regulation or public service, you will bring valuable insight and independent judgement to Council’s work. Experience of higher education and of supporting complex organisations through periods of change would be particularly welcome.
Successful candidates will demonstrate sound judgement, strong analytical skills and the ability to contribute thoughtfully to constructive debate. They will understand the distinction between governance and executive management and be able to act as a supportive but appropriately challenging critical friend to the University’s leadership. Above all, they will share a genuine commitment to higher education and the values of inclusivity, ambition, openness, fairness and respect that underpin the University’s mission.
As a member of Council, you will help ensure the University delivers its mission in the public interest, protects academic freedom, promotes an outstanding student experience and maintains the highest standards of governance and accountability. You will also act as an ambassador for the University, championing its activities and strategic ambitions within your networks and communities.
This is an unremunerated appointment, with reasonable expenses reimbursed. Members are appointed initially for a four-year term and are expected to contribute approximately 15–20 days per year, including attendance at Council meetings and committee commitments.
