Summary
The Energetics Analysis Group (EAG) delivers operationally focused science and technology to support and advise Home Office, MOD and wider Government. We conduct research and development into the use of equipment to support capabilities for UK Police, UK Forces and Other Government Departments. EAG delivers sovereign explosives, forensic and intelligence capabilities, we provide front-line scientific capability and specialist advice and intelligence-led support.

We're looking for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual with knowledge of analytical chemistry or forensic science to be part of our Quality Management Team. The role may involve supporting the Forensic Explosives Laboratory (FEL) and/or Type Approval (TA) work areas. As the Deputy Quality Manager you will use your good understanding of quality and its relation to scientific outputs to support the Quality Managers with running the Quality Management Systems to ISO17025:2017 and, for FEL, the Forensic Science Regulator codes of practice and conduct. You will use your problem solving ability to contribute to continuous improvement and support extensions to the scope of accreditation where required by regulatory standards, customer or internal requirements. You will also engage with other quality systems across the business.
Job description
In this role you will:
• Help the Quality Manager to maintain and improve our accreditation
• Be a point of contact for staff on quality matters
• Provide training and mentorship to staff on quality requirements
• Implement improvements to the Quality Management System

Your main relationship is with the Quality Managers, with day-to-day interaction with both operational teams and group management. Developing positive relationships with practitioners and team leaders will be important for ensuring the standards are understood and met.
It will also be important to develop and manage relationships with other Quality Managers within and outside of Dstl to share and distil good practice and collaboration with similar groups and organisations.

You will be mainly office based at Porton Down, Salisbury, Wiltshire. There will be a regular requirement for laboratory work through audits and preparing proficiency tests. There will be occasional requirements to travel to meetings/conferences with external contacts.

Responsibilities
We are looking for someone who has:
Experience of working within an analytical laboratory environment.

Desirable
Experience of working in an ISO accredited laboratory. Knowledge of auditing, calibration and proficiency testing. Associate member or member of a professional society or body.

Qualifications
A degree in a scientific subject is essential and an auditing qualification is desirable.

Skills
Essential
Strong organisational and communication skills. Critical thinking, problem solving and good attention to detail. A good working knowledge of Microsoft packages.

Desirable
Working knowledge of an electronic Quality Management System platform such as Q-Pulse. An understanding of method validation and measurement uncertainty.
