Department for Transport

Director, Rail Pensions and Workforce Reform
Remuneration: c.£93,000 per annum (pro rata, 0.7 FTE)
Location: London, Birmingham or Leeds. Frequent travel to other sites will be required.

The Department for Transport (DfT) looks after some of the biggest issues facing Government today; from dealing with the UK’s biggest ever peacetime repatriation to making sure our towns and cities are ready for self-driving vehicles, and responding to the challenges that the Covid-19 emergency has brought. We plan and invest in transport infrastructure to keep people and things connected, while looking for new ways to boost economic growth through safe, secure and sustainable transport, particularly focusing on the challenge of decarbonising the transport system.

It’s an exciting time to join DfT and we need talented, forward-thinking, innovative people and inspirational leaders who will play a crucial part in shaping the decisions and delivering the services that truly matter to the public we serve.

The DfT is looking for a part-time Director to job share with the existing part-time Director in leading and developing a newly formed team of circa 15 people which will bring together and strengthen the Department’s expertise on rail workforce, industrial relations and pensions policy. As a Director in the Senior Civil Service (SCS Pay Band 2), will play an important and influential role within DfT, leading in both a policy and delivery capacity in relation to workforce and pensions across the department and wider industry. The post-holder will work closely with their job share partner to lead and motivate team members across the Directorate, engage credibly across a broad stakeholder base, and develop policies which will shape and define the future of pensions and workforce in the rail sector.

To meet this challenging requirement, we are seeking an experienced leader of diverse teams, who can build engagement and capability within highly technical, commercial and politically sensitive environments. You will need to bring an understanding of developing policy and strategy which can be translated into deliverable change programmes, and the successful candidate will be a highly effective communicator, able to engage and influence at the most senior levels within Government and industry.

Closing date: 23:55 on Sunday 7th March 2021.
