Salary: Consultants are paid on a scale £26,000 at entry level - £34, 000 pa depending on experience

Location –We have an office in London but our staff are dispersed and live in cities and towns across the UK. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates based in Northern England. 

Contract – Permanent - Although our full-time hours are 35 hours a week, we are fully equipped to support home working and are happy to talk flexible working. 

We are a social research agency looking for people to join our public engagement team and support our work asking people about the issues that matter to them. We need people who are:

Curious and empathic: The first thing a consultant needs to do is know how to listen and ask the right questions. We are looking for people who can connect with others and give them the confidence to tell their story. Most of our work starts with collecting data, whether from interviews, focus groups, whole day workshops, or surveys and this is where you’ll spend a lot of your time.
Observant and analytical: once we have the data we analyse it to find patterns, you will be working on a range of analysis tasks, to document review to coding survey answers. We can train you in different research methods, but an eye for detail and the ability to spot an anomaly or a trend is a good start. 
Persuasive and articulate: our work only has an impact if we can share our findings in a compelling and accurate way, so another important part of your role will be writing reports and preparing presentations. We are looking for people who can tell a good story, whether out loud, on paper, or online.
Organised and proactive: you’ll be working across several projects at once with different deadlines and with different project managers. You’ll need to keep on top of your work, and your team.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who are passionate about and have a curiosity towards issues regarding climate, energy and the environment.

Being part of the Traverse team is about variety. In the space of a month we can go from talking to patients about their experience of video appointments with a GP, to running a focus group with construction industry trainees about sexism, to riding in a self-driving car with a group of citizens to help them think about new traffic laws. The common thread is that we want to involve people in the decisions that affect their lives. 

The consultant role is challenging, and you’ll learn fast by working across a range of different sectors, using a range of different methodologies to start with. After a couple of years most of our consultants quickly identify areas they are passionate about, and start to specialise.

We are aware that many highly capable prospective candidates may rule themselves out of work of this kind because they underestimate their own ability to do the role.
