Bar Standards Board
Salary Range £135k-£150k, subject to previous experience
The Bar Standards Board (BSB) is the independent regulator for barristers and specialised legal services businesses in England and Wales. The BSB sets the entry requirements for the profession and draws up the rules and guidance for how barristers practise. It maintains high standards in the profession through its supervision and assurance work, and if things go wrong it can take enforcement or disciplinary action. The BSB plays an important role in the good administration of justice and the upholding of the rule of law in England and Wales.
Over the next ten years, barristers in England and Wales will continue to face major challenges. These include changing consumer demands and expectations, significant reductions in public funding for Legal Aid and the justice system, technological advances and global competition. The BSB must ensure that its regulation is risk-based, proportionate and agile in a changing legal services and regulatory landscape and must be ready to adapt and to participate in shaping change. This is an exciting time to join the BSB and our new Director General will lead the organisation through the next critical period of transformation in the legal services market and its regulation.
You will work with the BSB Chair and Board to ensure that a clear vision, strategy and strong operational business plans are in place and delivered. An inspiring leader, with outstanding communication skills, you will drive a culture of collaboration and high performance, where a valued workforce is motivated to deliver exceptional services. Whether you are a serving Chief Executive/Director-General, or this is a career step, you will have a demonstrable track record operating and influencing at executive board level in a complex organisation. You will have the ability to get to grips with key policy drivers and to play a critical ambassadorial role in promoting the voice, impact and influence of the BSB, together with the demonstrable influencing skills to work effectively with our many varied stakeholders.
Politically astute, you will be a visible and motivating leader, exercising diplomacy and sensitivity when required yet willing to challenge the status quo when needed. Your integrity, standing and judgement will inspire public confidence in the regulatory arrangements and hold the respect of a highly educated, demanding and articulate profession.
